About Gallopin
The mirrors hit you first — massive, beveled, slightly foxed with age, bouncing gaslight-era brass and your own startled reflection back at you from every angle. Then the smell: butter browning in heavy pans, the mineral tang of oysters on crushed ice, bread that actually tastes like flour and time. This is a brasserie that opened when the stock exchange next door still mattered, and the room carries that swagger — zinc bar worn smooth by a century of elbows, mahogany dark enough to swallow secrets, ceiling moldings nobody bothers to replicate anymore because the craftsmen are dead. The menu does not try to impress you with reinvention. You get steak tartare mixed tableside, sole meunière in enough brown butter to stop your heart, and a cheese cart that rolls by like a dare. Service is brisk and slightly imperious, which in Paris means they respect you enough not to hover. The crowd splits between old-timers who've been lunching here since de Gaulle and tourists blinking at the décor like they wandered into a film set. Sit at the bar for a quick dozen Gillardeau oysters and a glass of Muscadet — it costs less than the dining room and the view of the bartender working that zinc is worth the whole trip.
