About Forbidden Cove

Walk through the working brewery floor at Bay City in Kearny Mesa, past the fermenters and the faint yeast funk, and you'll hit a doorway that drops you into something completely different — a dim, thatched-roof tiki room where the air smells like allspice and overproof rum. The decor leans hard into the kitsch, all carved wood and tropical flotsam, and it knows exactly what it's doing. This is not ironic; it's committed, and that commitment is what makes it work. The rum-forward cocktail menu is serious where it counts — the Mai Tai is balanced and proper, not the sugary slush most places pass off, and the more obscure tiki classics get the same careful treatment. Crowds skew younger and looser on weekend nights, but midweek you can actually grab a booth and hear your own conversation. Service can be a little uneven when it's packed, which is the one ding on an otherwise well-run operation in a stretch of Clairemont Mesa Blvd not exactly known for atmosphere. Prices feel fair for the craft involved, especially compared to what downtown tiki spots charge for half the effort. Go on a Tuesday or Wednesday, order something with falernum in it, and sit under the thatch like the strip mall outside doesn't exist.
