Sprawling Carlsbad resort that smells like eucalyptus and sunscreen the moment you step out of the car. The grounds are absurdly manicured — rolling golf course, two pools, a spa big enough to get lost in. It runs expensive, even by five-star San Diego standards, but the trade-off is space and quiet you won't find downtown. Four restaurants on-site means you never have to leave, which is kind of the point. Book a pool-facing room and commit to doing absolutely nothing.
